This one arrived with a name.
When the Shah family approached Clayventures for a custom birth announcement gift, they didn't hand us a mood board or a colour palette. They handed us a word — IRAA — and asked us to let it lead.

Aname rooted in Sanskrit IRAA is a Sanskrit name of rare beauty. It holds three meanings simultaneously — the earth, the wave, and the wind. The family wanted a handcrafted gifting piece that would be distributed with sweets — something guests could take home, keep on a shelf, and remember the day by. Not just a mithai box. A keepsake. A piece that whispered the story of her name without needing to shout it.

Our Why
Handmade objects carry what printed cards cannot
At Clayventures, we believe that handcrafted birth announcement gifts are among the most meaningful things we make. There is a particular kind of intention that goes into a piece designed to mark someone's arrival into the world — it must be personal, it must be beautiful, and it must last.
What drew us to this project was the alignment between material and meaning. IRAA means earth. Clay is earth. The connection was not metaphorical — it was literal. We were being asked to shape her name in the very material her name is made of.

The Design Process
Two tiers. Two worlds.
We designed a two-tiered ceramic stand — two oval clay platters connected by a single turned wooden dowel. The form was chosen deliberately. One tier sits grounded and wide, rooted to the surface — the earth. The second tier rises above it, lighter, lifted — the sky. Between them, the wooden spine holds both in balance, just as her name holds all its meanings at once.
Each platter was hand-shaped and finished in a warm white glaze with a soft golden rim — an edge that catches light, the way a new arrival lights up a room. The signature detail was the brushstroke: a wide, fluid sweep of deep teal painted across the surface of each tray. Not a wave illustrated. A wave felt — loose, free, gestural, alive.
The teal was chosen for its resonance with both water and the natural world. The brushstroke technique references ink wash traditions — the idea that beauty comes from a single, unhesitating movement. Much like birth itself.

The Details
Functional, thoughtful, lasting
The stand was designed with everyday use in mind. The bottom platter is fixed to the wooden base for stability. The top platter slides off the dowel, making it easy to clean and rearrange. Both trays are ideal for dry foods — think mithai, dried fruits, nuts, or small snacks — and make a beautiful standalone decor piece when not in use. A transparent gift box was chosen for packaging to let the piece speak before it was even unwrapped.
Each stand was distributed with sweets and accompanied by a hand-printed gift card — the front bearing a note from the Shah family welcoming IRAA, and the inside carrying a short poem written in the language of her name, her material, and her meaning.

What we love most about personalised ceramic gifting projects like this one is that they don't end when the sweets run out. Guests took home a small sculpture of someone's name. A piece of earth, shaped in love, glazed in meaning, handed across with warmth.
